10 Best Cat Condos for Large Cats of 2018

10 Best Cat Condos for Large Cats of 2018

Besides the obvious size differences, large cats are more energetic and stronger than the average cat. Some are crossbred with wild cats which make them a lot more active and curious.

Regardless of their origin, though, they have a strong need to be as high as possible. In order to get them to the heights they crave without your fridge, stove hood or TV stand precariously in the mix (not to mention the valuables you rest there) you will need to provide them with high spaces where they feel safe and comfortable.

That’s why we’ve taken the time to put together this list of the best cat condos for large cats of 2018. Your cat will need specialized condos that are made for their heavier weight, stronger activity and their seemingly unquenchable thirst to be up high.

To be clear about the difference between cat condos and other cat furniture, cat condos have at least one condo on it whereas some other types of cat furniture do not have them.

How To Choose The Best Cat Condos For Large Cats

In order to choose the best cat condo for your cat, there are a couple of things you should know first. Failing to have this information can leave you with a cat tree that will break or fall which can lead to serious accidents.

The most important quality you need to look for in your large cat’s future cat condo is sturdiness and durability.

This means that the cat tree is built with solid wood and well-balanced. It will stand firm to your cat’s roughest play times and last through the constant claw battering.

Some of the woods to look for are:

  • Plywood
  • Natural woods like Pine, Oak, or Maple
  • Compressed board

You should stay away from woods such as:

  • Pressed wood
  • MDF
  • Particleboard
  • Fiberboard

If the listing doesn’t say what type of board the cat condo is made with you can pretty much assume it is constructed with pressed wood. Pressed wood is what most cat trees are made of.

It’s flimsy, cheap and some studies suggest that the binding agents they use in these boards can be toxic to your everyone in your household. Also, these cat trees wobble and topple from normal cat play so they are definitely not what you are looking for.

Once you have established that the cat condo is sturdy, the next thing you need to think about is the perching preference of your cat. By this, we mean where does your cat like to observe.

Up high? Mid-air? or on the ground?

Whichever their preferences may be, make sure the condo has perches at that level. Usually, large cats like to perch up high because it gives them a good vantage point and also a safe resting place where most things can’t get them.

On the same topic, the cat condo should have enough perches for your cat to jump down comfortably. There should also be a way that your cat can jump straight up if s/he wants to do that instead.

The last thing to consider is scratching areas. These should be high enough for your cat to fully extend its body, front legs included.

It should have vertical and horizontal areas to do so. The scratching medium changes for each.

For vertical scratching, make sure the cat condo has good quality, unoiled, natural sisal rope. It should also be thick so that your cat doesn’t cut right through it.

For horizontal scratching, the material is typically carpet. Cats love the feel of sinking their paws into it as you may have noticed them doing on yours.

Now that you know how to choose the best cat condo for your large cat, let’s have a look at our top 10 list 🙂

Cat Climbing Structure’s 10 Best Cat Condos For Large Cats

1. Armarkat Jungle Gym Cat Condo

cat_climbing_structures_best_cat_tree_for_large_cats_

If you’re looking for an affordable cat condo for large cats that is both tall and sturdy then this is the one for you. It is built with compressed wood which is not quite as sturdy as solid wood but it will do the trick for a temporary fix.

Another reason I can tell you this is because it has a huge weight limit of 60 lbs! That’s enough to get two large cats on this thing although it may not be as equipped for that in other areas.

Some other features you will love about this cat condo are:

  • It is very cat-friendly. Having two ramps means that any cat at any age can easily access even the highest point of the tree. That might not be as important for kittens but for seniors, it is a big deal because they will likely be unable to jump up anymore.
  • It is really tall. Large cats want to be up high and this tree gets them up 74 inches which is just over 6 ft. That is plenty of height for your cat to feel safe and secure from any threats while resting too.
  • The covering is tasteful and soft. Your cat will love the feel of it and you will love that it doesn’t clash with anything in your room because of its neutral color.

This cat condo is a really great option for your large cat. If you want to learn more about it, click the button below.

So your cat will be able to rest easy, knowing it is safely tucked away out of sight. It also has a couple of high tower perches where your cat can observe from.

Its design also makes your room work, no matter how big or small, by fitting into the corner of your room. That means that it will save space which is especially great for you if you live in a small home, apartment, condo, or other small living space.

It also means that the tree has a little extra from the walls with support. For even more security, you can easily fasten this unit to the wall with a couple of angle brackets and screws.

Another thing your cat will enjoy about this tree is the many things that it can use to interact with its instincts. Look closely and you’ll notice that some of the vines are ropes, scratching surfaces, or other toys.

This will keep your cat busy and active. And a busy, active cat is a happy cat who’s paws and claws will stay away from and off of other places they shouldn’t be.

This picture does not do any justice to show you how grand this tree is. Standing at a massive height of 7 feet, your cat will no doubt enjoy the high vantage point it can obtain with this cat condo.

As equally stunning about this tree is the fine attention to detail including:

You will also have fun with this as a playful interaction between you and your cat. This will help you bond closer to your cat and it is a really great way to destress believe it or not.

Have you gone through this entire list wishing for a different color than the same old neutral colors? If you are looking for something different this might be an option for you to try!

Since a lot of cat condos for large cats are handmade and don’t sell nearly as fast as the cheap cat trees, they tend to be neutrally colored. This last cat condo is a chance at something different.

It is a fully black tree. At first, we were on the fence about the idea but have since come to love it.

The velvety color will still blend in with your roomscape while adding a special flare to it at the same time. It is also pretty unique to have a black cat tree.

There’s just not many out there. And to get this, you’re not sacrificing on quality.

The Bengal is an energetic, intelligent cat who loves the duty of being your companion. It has a sturdy, muscular body that allows it to reach some pretty interesting places in your home like chandeliers and atop stove hoods.

What People Are Saying on Amazon:

LOVE it! Complements from everyone who comes over! Most of all, my cat lives on it!!!! No more hanging out on my furniture and getting for all over the place.

I wasn’t sure he would like all the levels, but he really does. He uses different parts of it depending on the time of day or what he wants to play.

He’s a Bengal cat, so he’s fast jump high and is wickedly hard on the cat tree. It’s held up every step of the way! It was a chunk of change, but worth it! I spent hours researching all the different kitty condos and cat tree houses. So glad I went with this one!!! – CD

I like this brand because I had one previously for over 8 years and I thought it was time to get a brand new clean replacement. This model is sturdy as well.

I have bengals that play hard on it and it doesn’t shake much at all..Good Price on here too! – A. Nappi

This tree has two, long, 72 in (6 ft.) poles for your cat(s) to do just that. The intricate way the curved beds alternate will also help it to engage its mind and natural intelligence as it runs over them.

This tree won’t budge either. Its made of solid wood and top notch, eco-friendly materials.

Another benefit for you is that you won’t have to assemble anything as it comes fully put together. It is made right here in the USA so the only problem you may have is how to fit it in the door, haha! 🙂

Bengals are natural jungle cats. They long to be one with nature, prowling atop the mighty trees of the forest.

I have a very happy [big] cat. Be prepared for 2 things.

It is tuff to get in the door and the delivery people where ill-prepared to deliver it into the house, they left it on the front porch. – Carrin

This is the BEST cat tree-ever! I had SIX kitties playing on it all at once!

It is gigantic, well-constructed and looks wonderful! The “movers” skillfully brought it right into the house for me!

1. CatastrophiCreations Deluxe Cat Playplace

cat_climbing_structures_best_wall_mounted_cat_tree_catastrophiCreations_Cat_Mod_Garden_Complex_sm

While I was tempted too put this one at the end, I decided not to because I don’t want you to get bored of reading and miss this awesome opportunity for your Bengal cat.

Out of all the cat trees available, the best cat trees for Bengal cats is by far wall-mounted cat trees. Now I know that having something on your wall might not seem too appealing and/or secure but level with me for a moment.

Your Bengal wants to be up as high as s/he can. Using big clunky trees can sometimes take up a lot of space that you might not have especially in smaller rooms like bedrooms…unless you’re a millionaire with a million dollar house…and you might be…

But seriously, you can really engage your cat’s instincts with a wall-mounted cat tree. They also would prefer to be on the outermost walls of any room in order to get the best vantage points.

I’ve done a full review on this already which you can read by clicking here. Or you can read more info on Amazon because they have several other models as well.

Here’s the breakdown of the CatastrophiCreations Deluxe Cat Playplace:

What People Are Saying on Amazon:

This looks really cool on my wall. I bought a few extra pieces and re-arrange some things to fit it the way I wanted on the wall and its great. Cats love it!

They chase each other over the top of it all the time. I’ve added plants (not in picture) and it looks fantastic! It was easy to install but took a while since there were so many pieces.

I will probably add more throughout the house over time.- Paul

We bought this and then changed our mind about where to mount. We ended up splitting it up into smaller sections. I like that it’s modular and you have a lot of freedom with how to mount it. – Clint

Why Your Bengal Cat Needs a Cat Tree

As the video points out, Bengals are strong, energetic cats that love to run and jump around. They are notorious for climbing all over any and everything that they can.

Bengals want to be as high as they possibly can, no two buts about it. They are extremely intelligent and can open cupboard doors as well as figure out complex puzzles.

It is important that you provide your Bengal with more than one cat tree. This way, s/he will have safe places to perch and play rather than knocking over your valuables or potentially burning your house down.

In addition to cat trees, you can take your Bengal out for walks. It seems as though they are really easy to leash train and they do seem more dog-like than a cat in a lot of ways.

How To Afford Your Cat Trees for Bengal Cats

Some people have the money to buy these trees and some people don’t. Where ever you fall, it is fine.

This section is for you if you don’t have the money upfront to pay for one of these cat trees. The WORST thing you can do is settle for a cheap cat tree.

They definitely won’t work for these wild cats and can potentially put others in your home in danger as well if they fall or a shard of wood breaks off, etc. Trust me, its not a nice feeling to have a piece of wood stuck in your toe and its not the easiest thing to prove either because your blood saturates the board and its hard to find.

Sorry if that’s disturbing but its true. That’s my own personal experience and it is 50 times more painful than it sounds.

I’d definitely rather you avoid that all together so please do not take it lightly. Your Bengal needs solid cat trees designed for large cats.

Save Your Coinage

Never underestimate the power of stashing your coin. You will be surprised how it adds up.

I do this so much, my three year old daughter does it too. Most people are embarrassed about coin and I fail to understand why.

On average, saving all of your coin from purchases throughout that year can net you a savings upwards of 500 $s. That’s plenty for a couple of cat trees.

Save $20 From Each Paycheck

This is another method that I think is underutilized. Its so easy to get locked into the ‘I want this now’ trend that we forget that in a couple months from now, we’re still going to be alive, hopefully.

Don’t give me no sob story about you don’t have it either. This is a bit of tough love from me but chances are that you make tons of unnecessary purchases whether ifs coffee, food, clothes, etc.

Yes. You CAN afford to put aside 20 bucks per paycheck.

After 10 paychecks, you’ll have $500! And you don’t have to limit yourself to $20, you can make it as much as you want.

Buy One Here and One There

This goes along with what I was saying about wanting things to be instant. You might be able to afford one now or after a couple paychecks, so get the one.

Then next month, not the same month, get another. Repeat this process and you will be surprised how much cat furniture you will have collected in your home.

The important part about affording cat trees if you can’t is thinking long term instead of short term. Apart from these tips, I’m sure you can probably find lots of money-saving systems and plans online if you Google them.

Don’t stop at ‘I can’t afford’. Go on to ‘what do I need to do (legally & morally) to afford’.

How To Choose the Best Cat Trees for Bengal Cats

cat_climbing_structures_bengal_kitten_climbing_cat_treeSince Bengal cats are above average weight for cats and super energetic, you will need something a little more sturdy than what you will typically find at pet stores. You definitely want a sturdy tree that is designed to handle the extra weight.

And by sturdy, I mean that you want a tree that:

  • stands firm even during high energy activity
  • keeps its balance
  • built with strong durable material like plywood, pine or high-grade pressed wood
  • built with or the ability to easily add activities and toys for your cat

Your cat tree’s support is one of the most important features as you don’t want it to fall over on your cat, children, or other family members or guests to your home. It can be very dangerous to opt for a ‘cheap cat tree’ that is unstable, poorly built and not suited for cats over 10 lbs.

If you have multiple cats, buy for the largest cat. The good thing about cats is they are natural born jumpers, so a small cat will be able to jump around on bigger, taller platforms comfortably.

But a big cat will feel cramped on a small tree. If you have really young kittens, add ramps so that they can climb up on lower sections.

How To Tell If The Cat Tree Is Stable Enough To Support Your Large Cat

  1. In order to be sure that the cat tree is stable, first of all, look at the base. You want a square base or a rectangular one that is almost square meaning that there is only a couple of inches in the difference between the length and width.
  2. Next, check out how it is stacked. You want it to pretty much be stacked over the base. If it has too much going on outside of the base, then it might be unstable. A branch outside of the base won’t be a deal breaker. Just make sure there’s not too much and an opposing one is also a plus. Notice how the trees that we recommend all follow this rule.
  3. On the same subject as stacking, make sure that there is at least a base at the bottom or middle if there is one at the top. If there is only one at the top, figure how much weight you think the bottom is. If it is bottom heavy, it will probably be ok but if it is top heavy, you might want to reconsider. If in doubt, keep searching. You have tons of options 🙂
  4. Check out the material it is made from. Plywood is preferable as it is the strongest material, however, many cat trees are not plywood. The more common choice is compressed wood but make sure it is a good quality as they’re not all made equal.

Cat Tree Materials

Cat trees are made of specific materials that most cats like. The main materials that you need to know about are ones used for the:

  1. structure
  2. covering
  3. scratching posts

Let’s talk about each individually.

Best Structural Materials for Cat Trees for Bengal Cats

All cat climbing structures are made from wood. Typically, there are three main types. They are:

  • Plywood
  • Compressed wood or MDF (medium density fiber board)
  • Particle Board

The best cat trees for large breed cats should be preferably made of plywood. Plywood is solid wood.

It is the strongest and sturdiest wood which means that the structure will be able to handle your cat’s activity, weight, etc.

Compressed wood and particle wood are sort of the same as far as makeup. They’re both made of pieces of wood like shavings, clippings, and other forms of scrap wood. The biggest difference comes with their density and binding agent.

Compressed wood is the safest. Wood pieces are ‘glued’ together with wax and lignin (you can think of it as an organic glue). Not only is it eco-friendly but it is a very strong board that is durable and creates the best structural integrity for cat trees, etc.

Particle board is held together with binding agents that contain formaldehyde resin. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen but not to worry, there are different levels of it that are used in boards.

There are two types of particle boards and depending on the type determines the level of formaldehyde used in the binding agent. The safe type of particle board is E1. It is categorized as being ‘ecologically clean’ as it contains a very very small amount.

E2, on the other hand, maybe more of concern as it contains higher levels of formaldehyde. It is illegal to use this board to build children’s furniture. The levels vary but the safest versions come from Austria or Germany.

When choosing your cat’s tree or other furniture, it is important to take into consideration the type of board it is made up of. If it is made up of E2 particle board keep in mind that not only your cat is exposed to the formaldehyde but you and your household will be as well.

If you cannot get a tree that is made of plywood, compressed wood which is also called engineered wood or MDF, is a close second. If the structure is made of particle board, make sure that is E1 (sometimes called E0).

Best Covering Materials for Cat Trees for Bengal Cats

cat_climbing_structures_bengal_kitten_climbingCats are hunters so it makes sense that they will like materials that feel like the prey they are driven to hunt. This can be hard to think of your furry friend but his/her instinct is to catch and hold other animals.

Let’s dissect this a bit. Cats like to hunt small animals like birds and rodents. If you think about what covers these animals, in a general sense, they are soft and plush.

That is the same feel your cat’s tree or other climbing structures should have, especially in the areas where they sleep and play. Of course, this excludes the scratching post which we will discuss in a little bit.

Covering a cat tree with real animal fur would be expensive and controversial to some so most of them are covered in faux (fancy word for fake) fur materials.

Popular covering materials include:

  • faux fur
  • faux fleece
  • plush
  • carpet

There is such a thing as faux leather, however, I don’t think this would be a good choice for an entire structure. If you are looking at a structure and it has a small section or attachment with faux leather, that might be pretty nice for your cat.

Best Scratching Materials for Cat Trees for Bengal Cats

Much like every other part of the cat tree, condo, etc. the scratching posts need to be able to stand up to heavy activity.  Scratching is a natural cat behavior.

Common materials used to compose scratching posts or boards are:

  • Sisal rope
  • Sisal carpet
  • Natural cardboard

Sisal is a natural plant fiber that can be spun into rope or made into carpet fibers. It is generally sturdier than natural cardboard but not necessarily favored over natural cardboard.

Since sisal is a stronger material and cat trees are built to last a long time (hopefully), it tends to be the material of choice for the attached scratching posts. You will usually find it wrapped around all or most posts of cat tree condos.

Since most of these posts are vertical, it is recommended to still purchase flat or angled scratching posts as cats enjoy scratching in different positions. This will save your furniture from being their scratching post for good!

Why Large Cats Need Proper Cat Climbing Structures

Why It Is Important to Get the Best Cat Trees for Large Cats

cat_climbing_structures_bengal_kitten_climbing_cat_tree

Large cats are very active hunters of small prey. This means that they usually want to be up high to get a good vantage point on their ‘prey’.

They are very active and will destroy your home if you don’t have the right cat furniture, toys, etc. in place.

Most large cat breeds are crossbred with wild cats so they maintain a certain level of wildness about them.

What this means is that when you bring one or more large cats into your home they need a lot of high space or you will find them on top of everything that they shouldn’t be like your TV stand, stove hood, etc.

There is also the consideration of size. Large cats carry around more weight than the average cat which means that they need something sturdy that can adequately support it at rest and in motion.

Bottom line is that if you don’t install a couple of tall, sturdy cat trees for your big kitty, consequences can be costly in expense, your cat’s health, home damage, and more.

How To Choose The Best Cat Trees For Large Cats

When deciding on cat trees for you large cats, they MUST be:

  • sturdy
  • tall
  • durable

Do not make the mistake of thinking that a cat tree is fine for your cat just because it is tall. If you buy a weak, wobbly cat tree for you big kitty, it will fall and/or break.

And when that happens, it’s not going to be good. You have been warned.

Here are the things you want to look for in your cat’s furrever tree:

  • It is built with solid natural wood like oak, pine, etc.
  • It is built using thick, natural, unoiled sisal rope.
  • It is soft and comfy.
  • It is preferably close to or over 6 ft tall especially for Savannahs and Bengals

You also want to make sure the tree is tastefully made and something that you can see in your home.

How To Afford Cat Trees for Large Cats

The cat trees on this list are very good quality and worth every penny you will pay. But some might find it ‘too expensive’ to pay for their cat.

I neither buy that or support it. Your cat and his/her well-being are just as important as everyone else’s in your household.

But before this conversation gets weird, let me assure you that I know from personal experience how hard it is to scrape together money for gas let alone a cat tree. I scrape together coin so frequently that my daughter has learned to save hers simply by watching me do it!

Now we have two of these trees for our cats and I still scrounge for change so let me assure you that there’s NOTHING wrong with not having the money upfront to pay for one of these trees.

What I do is save. Save what you can for your unique budget. Yes, you can even if its something as simple as committing to save your loose coin instead of spending it.

Another idea is to make your own coffee or favorite drink instead of buying it but be sure to put aside the money that you are saving. It takes some discipline but you CAN do it! 😉

Once you get this handled then you just keep buying one tree at a time. The next thing you know you will have a couple of awesome trees since it is best that you mix and match different structures around your home.

They come in so many varying colors from neutral to red, blues, browns, etc. The sky’s the limit!

By doing this, you benefit both you and your cat by strengthening your own disciplinary skills and your cat gets places where s/he cat can properly and safely release his/her natural desires in the correct ways in the right places.

Which leads to the second benefit for you which will be SAVING thousands of dollars on future repairs and replacements of furniture or appliances around your home. Not to mention avoiding additional vet bills associated with caring for an unhealthy cat.

I do recommend that you purchase your cat’s trees online as the ones in pet stores are overpriced, too small, NOT sturdy and nowhere near as awesome as the ones we’ve selected or others that are built by these companies!

What People Are Saying on Amazon:

This product is amazing! The quality is unlike any other that I have seen. Sturdy construction for my 2 Bengal kittens and I know this will hold up as they grow. Many visitors have been surprised at the cozy feel of the material and wish there were baskets like this their size to sleep in, haha. I contacted the seller since UPS damaged the package upon delivery and they have been amazing. My replacement pieces are about to be shipped and I didn’t have to jump through hoops with UPS. Phenomenal customer service and quality! I wouldn’t buy any other type of tree! – Amazon Customer

We received our tree (Tiger) yesterday. Easy to assemble.Very heavy, sturdy & well made. We have 3 cats, two 7 months old & one 17 yrs old. The youngsters LOVE it. Their old tree was great when they were little, but very un-stable as they’ve grown. They hit this one at a dead run & it doesn’t even wriggle – so much safer than the old one. I love that there are replacement parts available, should it break – unlike other trees that are costly and then worthless if they break. They may cost more up front, but over the life of the cat(s), I expect to save $$. Reviews in EU are all very good, I was part of the first US order. – Cindy Beardsley

2. Prestige Cat Trees’ Neutral Staggered Cat Tower Cat Tree

This tree is meant to be laid over. It is equipped with beds gA-LORE!

It is also great because the highest bed is out of reach from mostly everything unless you’re a tall person like me who is over 6 ft. But we know better than to bug our kitties while they sleep so s/he’ll be safe and sound up there.

The important thing is that the dogs and small children can’t reach him/her. It’s also a good place to rest their food bowls when its feeding time for the same reason.

And if you’re cat is like some of mine and prefer to lay low to the ground, this tree has plenty of beds there too. Its sturdy, super comfortable and your cat is gonna love it!

3. Prestige Cat Trees’ Neutral Purrfect Cat Condo Cat Tree

cat_climbing_structures_best_cat_trees_for_large_cats_3_prestige_neutral_purrfect_condo

Although I’m not a fan of ‘tower’ styled cat trees, this one is a good choice for a couple of reasons.

The first being that it has a condo. Cats need to have somewhere to escape completely. Its an important part of your cat’s health and well-being so please don’t take this lightly.

I also like that it has varying levels. Having a large cat, it needs lots of space to make big stretched out leaps which it can do very nicely on this tree.

As you know, I am a big supporter of products made in the USA and this company builds each cat tree by hand right here in the USA with excellent prices for the value you are getting. It really is the purrrfect cat tree for your large kitty.

Here’s the breakdown of the Prestige Cat Trees’ Neutral Purrfect Cat Condo Cat Tree:

4. New Cat Condos Large Neutral Cat Tree

I love this one and think your big guy/girl will too. You know why?

I can visualize your playful kitty in the tunnel poking out a playful paw to see what s/he can ‘catch’. Maybe another cat’s paw or air or your hair…haha!

Your cat will have tons of fun in that space for sure. And at 69 inches high, this tree gives your cat enough vertical space for extra scratching or jumping but also to increase its territory.

A bonus with this one is that it doesn’t take much to assemble it so you won’t have to waste time trying to fix it up AND it is handcrafted right here in the USA! 🙂

– Clint

What people are saying on Amazon:

I mostly wanted a condo/cat tree that would be tall (at least 6 ft) but be sturdy, have scratch posts, and have perches wide enough to fit my two large cats (a 13 lb cat & a 15 lb cat)….& this condo met all of these desires. It is super tall, sturdy, has scratch posts, and my cats can comfortably fit on any perch on this cat playstation. – Excerpt from a review by Dinskus

This cat tree has been amazing. I have a very large cat, he’s not fat just really big at 15 lb of massive Tom Cat. This cat tree actually accommodates how tall and long he is and it doesn’t shake or move around when he climbs around on it. It’s good and heavy and I don’t worry about it falling over. My roommate’s cat also loves it. – Excerpt from a review by CocaNilla

10. Cat Tree King Cat Mansion Blackline

cat_climbing_structures_best_cat_trees_for_large_cats_10_cattreekings_mansion_blackline_light_grey

The previous tree is great but seemed like it was lacking some spice. So we’re closing out this list with this intricately designed one by the same company who specializes in cat trees for large cats.

This one is a lot different because it uses black sisal instead of the traditional beige/natural sisal in almost any other cat tree out there.

Your cat will have tons of fun zooming up the ramps and swinging on or swatting at the rope. Its funny, I could see my little kitten doing that so I KNOW your large cat will really enjoy this feature.

The condo on this is also quite large so your cat will have lots of room to stretch out for its private afternoon nap. Or if it prefers some light, there’s always the big bed at the top! 🙂

5. New Cat Condos Large Cat Tower with 4 Perches

cat_climbing_structures_best_cat_trees_multiple_cats_new_cat_condos_large_cat_tower_with_perches

If you’ve been following my other ‘Best cat trees for’ type posts, you will know that I’m now a fan of the tower styled cat trees because they don’t provide your cat with much vertical moving space or territory for that matter.

None the less, you might have certain reasons for liking this model of tree like personal preference, space requirements or perhaps you want it for the sole purpose of letting your cats sleep on it. The good thing about this one is that it has tons of beds.

You can put this next to one window and all of your cats can enjoy the sun together without having to share any of their space with another body. That way you’re not crowding all of the windows in your home which can become a big eyesore real quick!

This one is a good choice if you have multiple large or overweight cats and since it has two ramps it also great if you have kittens or senior cats.

Your cats will enjoy their time running and jumping around on the many levels of this tree and you will enjoy the reduction of scratches in the furniture too! 🙂

8. Armarkat Cat tree Furniture Condo

cat_climbing_structures_best_cat_trees_for_maine_coons_armarkat

Even though this cat tree only has one condo it is still a good option for multiple cats because it includes a hammock which is just as comfortable for a cat to lounge in. This tree is also a good choice because it has the two tower beds at the top.

When it comes to cats, you never really know what they like until you start testing things out. With this tree, it gives your cats plenty of options to choose from.

And even if, say two cats like the hammock, you can easily buy or make another one to install on additional posts because it has plenty of room to do so.

9. Go Pet Club Cat Tree – 72 in.

catclimbingstructures_GoPetClubCatTree

Go Pet Club is an oldie but not necessarily a goodie. More like an ok-ie, lol.

They are cheaply made and as such, aren’t the best quality cat trees. But if you’re in a pinch or trying to get something in your home quickly then this tree is a good one to go with.

10. SONGMICS 67″ Cat Tree Condo

cat_climbing_structures_best_cat_trees_for_maine_coons_SONGMICS_67_inch_large_cat_tree_condo_with_scratching_post

This tree is a monster of a tree but I like it for one type of cat in particular. You may have noticed that in some of the descriptions I noted they were not good for ‘cave dwelling cats’.

These type of cats want to be completely secluded. This behavior is not to be confused with unnatural circumstances like avoiding threats, etc.

I like this tree for cave-dwelling cats because the condos are completely closed and dark. They are great if you also have multiple cave dwellers in your home but any cat will enjoy them just the same!

Here’s the breakdown of the SONGMICS 67″ Cat Tree Condo:

Why Do Your Cats Need Special Cat Trees?

Can you imagine having to share a bed with someone else? You probably can right?

Even just sharing it with a spouse or significant other can get ball-kneeing crammed. Then pile on Fido(s) and the kids and things get too tight too quickly!

Its the same principle with your cats. They want their own space to layoff and call their own. For this reason, when you have multiple cats, you need a bigger, more equipped tree for them to share.

Depending on how many you cats you have, it may even be a good idea to get more than one.

What Will Happen If You Don’t Get Best Cat Trees Multiple Cats?

By not getting your cats the best cat trees for multiple cats, you’re pretty much asking for household war. Cats like to cuddle when they are ready BUT they are more possessive about their resting areas.

This means that they WILL fight over their spot. It can be as simple as a couple boxes to full-on brawls and even though cats are smaller than dogs when they fight they do much more damage.

Personally, I’d rather not break up any animals fighting which is why I ALWAYS go that extra mile to keep them happy and you should too. Its dangerous for you and everyone in your household to have fighting cats around but they’re pretty easy to please when you give them what they want.

Some cats will prefer beds to condos and some just want to be in the sun. You have to know what your cat likes and give it to him/her.

What to Look For In Best Cat Trees Multiple Cats

Since these cat trees are for multiple cats, you should look for ones that are:

  • very sturdy
  • have multiple structures like beds, condos, scratching posts, etc.
  • taller rather than shorter
  • ramps to make chasing more streamline

How Much Cat Trees For Multiple Cats Do You Need

If you have less than three you may be able to get away with one large tree. This wouldn’t work of course if you have large cats like Maine Coons.

If you have more than three cats, you will definitely need two or more trees. The good thing right now is that you can get a really good tree for pretty decent prices if that’s an issue to you.

It was for me at one point too so now sweat 😉 I’m really happy to be able to recommend decently priced, good quality trees to you.

But that is all I have for you today! If you have any questions, comments or requests, please leave them in the comments box below.

Best Cat Climbing Structures [For ALL Cats]

Best Cat Climbing Structures [For ALL Cats]

In order to keep your cats off your furniture, you should be providing them with a variety of the best cat climbing structures for their personalities, sizes, and preferences. Cat climbing structures are not to be confused with cat scratching posts which are only good for your cat to scratch on.

Structures are tall with multiple platforms for your cat to jump, sleep, scratch and play on. They are more practical and will keep your cats more satisfied than getting a toy that only satisfies one behavioral instinct.

Now don’t get us wrong, scratching posts are an amazing addition to your cat pleasing repertoire but it should be paired with furniture like cat trees, condos, wall mounts, etc.

The Importance of Finding the Right Cat Climbing Structures for Your Cats

Cats are the lovable, cuddly members of our family that bring a whole new perspective and variable to our lives. Their personalities, preferences, and sizes vary so much that sometimes it’s hard to really know what’s the best thing to do for them or how to make them more comfortable.

One problem that a lot of cat parents face is the dreaded furniture shredding. We spend THOUSANDS on couches, dressers, love seats, tables, chairs, and even toys for our kids just for them to be destroyed by our furry babies.

But we can’t be mad at them, we love them too much for that! Also, remember that scratching is a natural part of cat behavior albeit is still a big problem.

Sometimes we go and buy a cat climbing structure or scratching post that they’re really not even interested in. Has that happened to you?

Don’t worry, lol, its happened to me too, PLENTY of times! Then I learned that there are basically three different categories of cats and according to each category determines what sort of toys or structures they will take to.

Then after that, you need to consider other factors like their size, age, and physical condition.

For instance, if your cat is large then she’s going to need a sturdier structure than a small cat. She’s going to be heavier and likely stronger as well then a kitten or smaller breed of cat.

On the other hand, if you have a kitten or smaller cat, they might not be able to climb up a tall structure. If pushed too far they can potentially develop problems like a fear of heights or get injured if they fall off a tall cat tree for instance.

Likewise with older cats. They will likely suffer from joint issues that do not allow them to jump and climb as easily as when they were younger.

Studies have found that around 80 – 90% of cats over 12 years old will have developed osteoarthritis. In this case, you will need structures that are connected by ramps or stairs that make it easy for your cat to access and climb.

So you can see how important that you take the time to choose the right cat climbing structures for your kitties.

Now I know what you’re thinking. Your mind is exploding with questions, ‘what should you do’s and you might even be feeling a little nervous.

That’s ok! Just keep reading. We’re going to deliver the information you need to know and more!

Understanding Cat Behavior: Its A Little Different

You might not realize it, but cats are actually more aggressive than dogs. They are by nature hunters.

Think about your cat’s behavior and you will soon realize the validity of this statement.

Cats stalk, pounce, scratch, bite particularly around the neck & trip even in play. Some cats show these behaviors more than others but it is still important that you know, understand and accept this information.

Cats communicate differently depending on their upbringing and environment.

Some cats are very vocal. These are usually cats that have been raised around other cats since they were kittens.

Since cats are naturally hunt driven, they like areas where they can get a good vantage point. Different cats do this differently but the goal is still the same.

Some might like to be high and have a bird’s eye view of the area while others might like to be low and hidden. Obviously, a house cat doesn’t need to stalk their prey but they still have that instinct, therefore they still portray these behaviors.

It is important that you know how your cat communicates and behaves so that you can best help him or her. Also, it will avoid wasting money on a ‘stupid thing’ that your cat has no interest in.

Choosing the Right Cat Climbing Structures For Your Cat

Picking a Cat Climbing Structure By Your Cat’s Sizes (Sm, M, L, XL)

Cat sizes are very varied even in domestic breeds. Basically, there are four sizes, small, medium, large and extra large.

cat size chart

Small Cat

A small cat might also be a kitten. It is under 8 lbs (4kg) and under 13 in (33cm). Some small cat breeds are the Singapura and Bombay. Even if your cat is a kitten, s/he will still need cat climbing structures.

Small cats need cat trees that are low to the ground. They will still have multiple platforms and condos for them to play in. Sturdiness isn’t as important but you still want to get something decent.

Medium Cat

Most domestic cats fall into this category but some notable breeds are the American Shorthairs and Bengals. Their size ranges from 13-16 in (33-41cm) and weighs between 8-12 lbs (4-6kg).

Medium cats need climbing structures that reach above 52 inches high. This is the easiest category to find cat climbing structures for.

Large Cat

Some large cat breeds are the Ragdoll and British Shorthair. They range in size from 13-16 in (33-41cm) and weight between 12-16 lbs (6-8 kg).

A lot of large cat breeds may also fall into the extra large size category because their size ranges are so varied.

For Large cats, you need to make sure to get a sturdy cat climbing structure. Usually, these will be made from solid wood rather than compressed wood like most others.

They may also be taller since your cat will likely need to climb higher. Many models are designed like towers which means they are reinforced a lot better but there are also sprawling varieties as well.

Extra Large Cat

To give you a visual, an extra large cat is about the size of a medium dog. The largest domestic cat breeds, the Maine Coon and the Savannah, can both get up to 25 lbs (11 kg) naturally!

These cats also need a lot more play and jumping area than smaller breeds. This is why if you are the parent of an extra large cat you will need some sturdy, wall mounted, cat climbing structures even more so.

Extra Large Cats can be upwards of 16 in (41 cm) and, as forementioned, upwards of 16 lbs (8kg) reaching 25 lbs (11 kg). That is a lot of cat to cuddle!

Like with large cats, if you have an extra-large cat, getting a cat climbing structure made out of solid wood is not an option. You will probably also need more than a standing tree.

Adding wall mounted climbing structures is a must.

Choosing the Right Cat Climbing Structures By Your Cat’s Behavioral Patterns

In general, there are four different cat behaviors. This is what will really matter when deciding what cat structure is right for your fuzzy baby.

Have you ever wondered why there are so many variations of cat trees. for example? Its because different cats prefer different domiciles and observation settings. Sounds confusing? Here, let me explain.

Behavior 1: Tree Dwellerstree dweller

The tree-dwelling cat is probably the one that we are all most familiar with. Mainstream media always depicts the cat that got stuck in the tree or the one taking a quiet, afternoon snooze up high in its branches.

To some degree, this characteristic of cats is true. They tend to hunt in trees and get a birds eye view of their prey.

Some cats have a very strong instinct to be able to see what is around them, hence they spend more time up high. They do not and will not feel comfortable on the ground.

Cats with this behavior pattern will need climbing structures that are tall, off the ground, and parts with varying heights such as a tall cat tree with tall and short parts or/and (usually and) wall mounts that go up and down your wall. One breed that I can think of that is notorious for this is the Savannah.

Remember, if your cat starts getting aggressive and displaying bad behaviors, he might simply not feel comfortable being on the ground. One way to identify if your cat is a tree dweller is to note where she rests. If she is in a high place like on top of the fridge, TV stand, or dresser, she is probably a tree dweller.

When you think about structures for this type of cat, think HIGH off the ground!

Behavior 2: Bush Dweller

The Bush Dweller is almost the opposite of the Tree Dweller. He likes to be on the ground or close to it. He wants to be ready for his prey when it happens along. He likes to hide in a bush or tall grass much like a lion does.bush dwelling

If you are trying to identify if your cat is a bush dweller, again, notice where she is resting or relaxing. Does she prefer a pile of clothes in the laundry on the floor? or maybe she hides in the open drawer you didn’t feel like bending down to close properly.

Structures that are good for tree dwellers are low to the ground. Scratching posts and trees with boxes that are low to the ground will be perfect for your bush dweller. Remember, even though the cat prefers to be low to the ground she still wants to be hidden.

Behavior 3: Cave Dweller

This behavior is not commonly known and can easily be mistaken for bush dwelling but they are not the same. Let’s dig into the cave dwelling personality a little bit deeper.

Cave dwellers like low areas like bush dwellers but they don’t want to be found. They don’t want to stalk their prey, they want to hide out in dark, enclosed, secluded areas. This means that they tend to seek refuge under things like the bed or in your closet.dark cat

Have you ever had to really, and I mean reeeaaallllyyy, hunt for your cat to find them under the bed or behind the couch? During your search, you’re bending, crawling and moving things trying to find your fur baby?

Now, this shouldn’t be confused with a scared cat who is trying to escape a threat like another cat, a child or a dog. This is the natural, comfortable, normal behavior for cave-dwelling cats.

To keep a healthy relationship with your cat if he is a cave dweller, you will want to get cat climbing structures with fully closed in sections. This will keep your cat used to you, your family and your visitors. By doing this, he is less likely to display anti-social behavior which can be physically and emotionally draining as well as damaging.

Behavior 4: Combination

As the name suggests, a combination cat will display a combination of the above behavior patterns. This can mean that the cat portrays only two or all three.

Also, note that this type of cat varies greatly. No two cat is the same but realize that in this group, the variation is even more so. You will really need to pay attention to your cat’s habits before making a decision on climbing structures.

For instance, you might notice that your cat is sleeping in the closet and on top of the fridge or in areas that are in the open as well as really covered up. Their mannerisms might change too. For instance, they might be very sociable with you one minute and then not sociable with you the next.

Structures for this cat will be ones that include features that all cats would like. For instance, you would want a tree with varied heights that has a closed in box and another cubby of some sort.

Choosing the Right Cat Climbing Structures By Your Cat’s Behavioral Patterns

As you probably know, cats age differently from humans. In fact, their aging process is much more accelerated. Because of this, sometimes it is easy to think that you can buy an adult structure for your cat’s entire lifetime.

Although this is a pretty attractive choice, it is not the best one for your cat’s well-being. Like us, your cat has 3 stages to their life cycle. Note: The below ages are reported in human years.

  1. Baby/Adolescent aka kitten – under 2 years old
  2. Adult – 2 – 12 years old
  3. Senior – 12 years old until death

How To Tell Your Cat’s Age In Cat Years

For your information, if you want to find out how old your cat is in cat years, you can do so by using the following formula.

1st cat year = 15 people years

2nd cat year = 24 people years

Every cat year after = 4 people years

So a cat that is 12 human years is about 64 years old in cat years!

Best Climbing Structures for Kittenscat_climbing_structures_carpet

Kittens are the trickiest age when it comes to cats because a 6-month-old kitten looks pretty grown up. Don’t let its size fool you.

A kitten takes 2 years to fully develop. This includes body mass but also its structure aka bones, muscle, etc., cognition or brain development, reflexes, etc.

For this reason, we recommend that you get kitten furniture that is specifically for kittens. Look for structures that are low to medium in height and have relatively close platforms.

This way, small kittens can climb their way up and larger kittens can jump over them. In addition, if there is an accident and the kitten falls, they are less likely to be traumatized or injured.

Best Cat Furniture for Adult Cats

Most cat furniture is designed with adult cats in mind. The biggest factor in deciding what kind of climbing structures to get for an adult cat would be their behavior preferences which we discussed in the previous section.

Always make sure the structures are sturdy to avoid accidents.

Best Cat Climbing Structures for Older Cats

Whether we like it or not, old cats are likely to have some sort of joint issues. This means that they will need specialized structures.

When deciding on furniture for senior cats, look for ones that have ramps, closely situated platforms, and low or relatively low to the ground.

The Best Sturdy Cat Tree for Large Cats [Your Cat Needs This]

The Best Sturdy Cat Tree for Large Cats [Your Cat Needs This]

Ok, let’s be real. When your cat is the size of a small dog, you need a little bit more than the average, flimsy cat trees that are meant for cats under 9lbs.

There’s no taking any chances with your cat, other pets, kids, and everyday household hustle and bustle going on. You need the best sturdy cat tree for large cats and cheap crap is out of the question.

But don’t be alarmed right away. The good news is that in the long run, you will be saving a ton of money because this one tree will likely last your cat’s lifetime whereas the cheap stuff you have to keep buying every couple of years.

Yes, it will pay for itself. You will get a sturdy tree that your cat will enjoy. And your home will be happy and safe.

What Is The Best Sturdy Cat Tree for Large Cats?

In general, the fast, cheap manufactured trees are not going to work when you have a large cat. Most of the best sturdy trees are handmade which is good but it also presents a  big problem.

You may find that they have difficulty keeping stock in because they are in high demand and take a little extra time to make. Some even ship fully assembled a lot of times at no extra cost.

In addition to that, they have very low review counts. As a business owner, I can relate to how challenging it is to get buyers to leave reviews.

The good news is that the few reviews they do have tend to be excellent because they truly are excellent creations.

Despite these conundrums, we’ve weighed the options and chose one that stands out above the rest.

The Best Sturdy Cat Tree for Large Cats Summary

Cat Tree King’s Tiger Cat Tree for Extra Large Cats is built to withstand anything your cat throws at it. It is built of solid wood and instead of the cheap plastic connectors that normal cat trees use, the ones in this unit use extra-strong ABS.

ABS stands for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and what it is a super strong, recyclable thermoplastic. You might be familiar with products like Lego, computer keyboard keys, and power tool casings.

If you don’t know how strong this plastic is, try stepping on your child’s Lego block (which I’m sure every parent has done anyways, lol!) or drop your desktop keyboard on the floor (just a regular drop). They likely don’t break and this is the same strength that you can expect to find in the plastic used in the joints of these cat trees.

Not only that but the plush covering is also extra strong. Every part of this tree’s covering from the sisal rope to the plush are reinforced by being glued to the wood structure.

It is huge, stylish and comfortable. Which means that it will go lovely in your living space and your cat will be able to enjoy it while you rest assured that the tree won’t fall on your cat or anyone else in the home.

Benefits of Using Cat Tree King’s Tiger Cat Tree for Large Cats

Oh where to begin! This tree has so many benefits for your cat and your household.

The Best Sturdy Cat Tree for Large Cats Delivers Peace of Mind

As you probably already figured, having a cat tree that doesn’t shake or wobble is obviously safer for all members of your household and visitors. You will gain great peace of mind when the weight of your old wobbly tree has been lifted.

I can tell you from experience, never underestimate the power of peace of mind. When your mind is at ease you will be more productive, have better relationships with others, have a huge boost in mood and overall internal health, and more.

Cat Tree King’s Tiger Cat Tree Will Substantially Increases Your Cat’s Territory

Another benefit to using this cat tree is that your cat will have a large increase in its territory. This matters whether your cat is male or female. I’m not sure if you know but vertical territory, in your cat’s terms, is an increase in its overall space.

By doing it you can do amazing things for your cat including:

  • Improve its mood
  • Your cat may start to get along better in your home
  • You may see your cat more often now that it has this new place that is its own away from threats
  • Give your cat peace of mind
  • Being almost 6ft tall, it will give your cat the vantage point it needs to feel comfortable.
  • The bed at the top is super comfortable so it will spend many hours there instead of undesirable or potentially dangerous places like on top of the oven hood or refrigerator.
  • Your cat gets horizontal room as well which will allow it to stretch out and horizontally scratch in addition to vertical stretching and scratching
  • Good exercise/workout
  • A designated area for your cat to do what cats do like scratching, climbing, that crazy scratch-climb-dash spaz they do, sleeping and more

Give Your Cat Somewhere Secure and Comfortable To Lay

It goes without saying that we all like a comfortable place to rest. So seeing how this is covered with extra comfortable plush, that is a given.

However, this is even more so beneficial if you have an older large cat. More than 90% of cats over 14 will have developed some sort of joint problems.

That being said, they will be able to rest their aching joints on something cushiony instead of a hard piece of board. Just visualize that for a second and you will see which choice is the clear winner.

In regards to senior cats, I also like that this model comes with stairs which will give them easy access to climb onto it since they will likely have issues with jumping up.

How To Use The Cat Tree King’s Tiger Cat Tree for Large Cats

The good thing about this cat tree is that assembly is easy and doesn’t take much technical skills at all.

Once the tree is up, we always recommend that you put it somewhere along the wall because that’s where cats want to be, around the edge to get the best view of the entire room.  Don’t stick it in the middle and wonder why your cat isn’t using it.

Once the tree is fully assembled and installed, put your cat’s food bowl at the top or on one of the higher platforms where small children and dogs won’t be able to reach.

If you have multiple cats, you can do this one at a time especially if they have their own specific bowls by their terms. Cats can be iffy, some are like this some aren’t.

For instance, my female is possessive about her bowl but my male couldn’t care less.

Don’t force them on the tree. If the food doesn’t get them there try putting some of their favorite toys on there.

You can also gently pick them up and introduce them to it. Feed them treats while you do this. Make them feel special and comfortable because if you feel uneasy then they will sense it and be afraid.

Personally, I’ve never had trouble getting my cats to use any tree and I think my approach is a big part of it. Animals have good senses but don’t necessarily know what everything is that we want them to use.

So show them that the tree is their refuge and they will learn that it is that as well.

Who Is This Cat Tree For?

This cat tree is for anyone who wants the best, sturdiest cat tree for their large or extra large cat. This includes any cat that is over 16 lbs (8 kgs). Specific breeds include:

  • Maine Coons
  • Bengals
  • Ragdolls
  • Bermise
  • American Bobtails
  • etc.

This tree is also great for senior cats who have joint issues because it is so sturdy. But also because it is soft for them to lay their aching joints on and they can gain access to the tree by climbing the stairs instead of having to jump up.

What I Like About Cat Tree Kings Tiger Cat Tree for Large Cats

  • Stylish
  • HUGE!
  • Sturdy
  • Made with good quality, non-toxic, material
  • Coverings are glued down including the sisal rope on posts
  • Parts can be re-ordered as needed

What I Don’t Like About This Cat Tree for Large Cats

There’s not a whole lot to not like about this tree, to be honest. I know a lot of people would say that it’s expensive but I disagree.

This tree is well worth the price. I personally think its a steal especially considering this huge thing is imported but costs the same as ones that are handcrafted in the USA.

If you ‘can’t afford it’ I challenge you to look into saving up the money. I think we sell ourselves short by only looking at what we currently have in our pockets instead of what we can accumulate over time.

Even if its just $20 per pay cycle, you will be surprised how that money will add up. Also, studies show that if you save up all your loose change through the year, on average, you will have saved around $500!

That’s enough for this tree and a nice treat for yourself as well for doing a good job saving!! 😉

Believe me, I know the feeling, dread, and disdain to cash out money on something especially when you really ‘don’t want to.’

I hope this doesn’t come across as harsh. I’m truly delivering this advice sincerely with the best intentions and your cat’s well-being in mind.

5 Best Cat Trees For Kittens Under 2 Years Old

5 Best Cat Trees For Kittens Under 2 Years Old

When it comes to kittens, buying them the right furniture can be tricky for two reasons:

  1. Kittens are frail but still need much of the same exposures as adult cats like climbing, scratching and jumping.
  2. Kittens won’t stay small for long and it can seem like buying furniture for a short period of time is a waste of money.

The latter being a poor excuse because the best cat trees for kittens will also be useful to them as adults. Stay away from the flimsy, cute crap that is meant to be a literal money sink and purchase sturdy, functional structures that your kitten is more likely to use.

In addition, you should be adding MORE pieces as your cat grows and to start collecting cat furniture from when they are kittens makes the financial requirements less burdensome.

This is one of our top recommendations because of the unique style of the condo. It has plenty of space for your kitten to hide, play and still interact with the outside undercover.

The platforms are situated close together for easy climbing and under 5 ft tall, this cat tree is low enough where you do not have to worry about it suffering from an unexpected fall.

The extra scratching surfaces are also a plus because not only will your kitten be able to scratch them but it will also be able to climb or shimmy up them.

Although this is partially plastic, this tree is a really nice concept. It is literally a tree.

Its a shame the leaves are plastic but I’m not sure there are any other options other than real leaves that won’t survive your cat’s battery.

The platforms are hidden within the tree and your kitten will have a taste of nature as it safely climbs from one level to the other. It is suitable to hold 32 lbs so it can hold multiple kittens at once.

Another plus about this is that if you are concerned about a clunky cat tree ruining the aesthetics of your space, this cat tree will blend right in as part of the decor! 😉

If you like the cuter things in life this is a good one for you that is also a great option for your kitten. I mean, one of the platforms are shaped and decorated to look like a kitten paw. How cute is that?!

In addition, it makes use of the ramp as a scratching post which means that you can be pretty sure its climbable.

The downside about this cat tree is that there isn’t much hiding places for your kitten as some of the others we’ve shown you prior so it might feel a little exposed. But your kitten will be playing a lot more than the average cat so that’s not quite a deal breaker in this instance.

Why Do Kittens Need Cat Trees & Furniture

It’s easy to assume that your tiny ball of fur doesn’t need much besides a ball of yarn. While a ball of yarn is a great interactive tool for you and your kitten to play with together, it will not fulfill all of your kitten’s needs.

Remember that most development in any animal happens when it is young. For this reason, it is especially important for you to expose your cat to climb, scratch and jump.

This allows it to practice the hunting motions that its body is driven to perform even if it never actually hunts a day in its life.

Getting your kitten a cat tree will help its musculoskeletal system to develop properly by exposing it to getting a good workout on a properly equipped cat tree.

Many people think that it is ok for their cats to get their workout on household items. This common practice is impractical and dangerous.

First of all, your cat’s claws are not suited for materials other than wood like concrete and other slippery surfaces. In addition, your cat can cause an accident by unintentionally turning on a switch like the one to your stove top.

This creates a potentially harmful situation as it can lead to a house fire. Take my word for it because this has happened to me. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Get your kitten and cats the right climbing structures for the betterment of your entire household.

What To Look For in the Best Cat Trees for Kittens?

As I eluded to in the intro, there are tons of options when it comes to kitten climbing structures most of which are complete garbage. This is because they are flimsy but also because they don’t meet any or most of your kitten’s needs.

I don’t know about you but in my mind, the best way to spend money is to get the MOST out of my money instead of buying cheap which leads to even more money spending over time.

So before we get into our recommendations, I want to let you know why we have chosen these and what you need to look for if you decide to go rogue and keep searching on your own.

The Best Cat Trees For Your Kittens Must Fit Its Needs & Habits

Just like an adult cat, kittens have their own set of needs, habits, and preferences that must be met in order for them to develop into healthy adults.

For instance, kittens love to play and in particular climb. They have razor sharp claws that do not retract until they are a couple of months old.

Kittens enjoy shimmying up poles but would prefer to stay closer to the ground as they have not yet developed enough skills to handle heights.

Some other kitten needs and habits include:

  • good hiding places that have good views of the outside
  • climbing
  • playing
  • scratching
  • low to or on the ground
  • seclusion from threats

When deciding on the cat tree for your kitten make sure it has all or most of these qualities:

  • low to the ground, under 5 ft (152.4 cm)
  • sturdy
  • protected platforms
  • platforms that are close together
  • ramps
  • condos, tunnels and hiding spots that they can comfortably move around and play without being discovered
  • scratching posts

best_cat_trees_for_older_cats_vidagoods_51_inch_cat_tree_condo

The Vidagood 51″ Cat Tree is a good choice if you have multiple senior cats. It includes a ramp, condo and multiple beds for their entertaining pleasures!

The awesome thing about this tree is that it has been recently upgraded to include better beds, more space and soft, faux fur covering. That means:

  1. more surface area for your cat to walk, climb and lounge on
  2. soft, cushion for your cat’s aching joints
  3. ability to sprawl out instead of being cramped to increase blood circulation around their bodies

This cat tree has three scratching posts that encourage your senior cats to maintain healthy scratching. It is both durable and sturdy so you won’t have to worry about it falling over even with multiple large senior cats.

Modern Cat Furniture for Older Cats

4) Vesper Cat Furniture, V-Double

best_cat_trees_for_older_cats_vesper_cat_furniture_v_double

I love the modern design and feel of The Vesper Cat Tree, V-Double. It is sturdy and made with yours and your cat’s preference, comfort, and health in mind.

The structure is built with high-quality New Zealand pine and relaxing surfaces include soft, memory foam cushions. The edges of boxes and other platforms are rounded to stave the pain should you bump into it. Youch! that hurts on sharp edges so the fact that this tree has rounded edges really shows the thought put into its creation.

Adhesives used to keep the parts of this tree together are water based which means there is no formaldehyde present.

This tree is designed for multiple cats and includes two cozy cat condos. The platforms are close together which makes it super easy for your senior cat to walk or climb up to get to the top.

Size (L x W x H):  25.6 in (65 cm) x 25.6 in (65 cm) x 40.8 in (103.63 cm)

5) Vesper Cat Furniture, V-High Base

best_cat_trees_for_older_cats_vesper_cat_furniture_v_high_base

Much like #4 Vesper Cat Furniture V-Double, the V-High Base is top notch quality and has a sleek modern design. The platforms are further apart so you might be wondering how this fits. Let me explain.

I’ve created this list with multiple cat types and sized in mind. This particular one would be good for larger cats like Maine Coons that can easily cover the distance with their body length.

Being tall myself, I know the discomfort of trying to squeeze all this extra length in or on things that are meant for much shorter statures. If you have a large senior cat, it will enjoy this piece very much AND it is nice and sturdy so it can hold their weight without wobbling.

This tree is made of New Zeland pine and adhesives used on it are water-based. This one is better for a single cat if you don’t have any other climbing structures in your home.

Size (L x W x H):  22.1 in (56.13 cm) x 22.1 in (56.13 cm) x 47.9 in (121.67 cm)

6) Baobab Modern Cat Tree in Eco-Friendly Laminate

best_cat_trees_for_older_cats_baobab_modern_cat_tree_in_eco_friendly_white_laminate_and_black_mohair_faux

When it comes to your senior cat’s safety, the Baobab Modern Cat Tree wins the gold. Not only is it sturdily built with composite wood but it also has non-skid, rubber feet to ensure this tree isn’t moving anywhere while your cat does its thing.

It has a slim, modern design that has a ton of modern features like laminate covering and removable pads which make it super easy to clean.

I always enjoy products made in the USA. Being a local business is a plus. This tree comes out of Portland Oregan made by ‘Square Cat Habitat’.

Some of the platforms are a little high for the average cat. Again, I’ve chosen this one based on referring it to a large older cat.

Size (L x W x H):  23 in (58.42 cm) x 23 in (58.42 cm) x 56 in (142.24 cm)

7) Go Pet Club Cat Tree, 72 in.

best_cat_trees_for_older_cats_go_pet_club_cat_tree_72_inches

The Go Pet Club Cat Tree is a tall tree that is very good for older cats. This is because it has two ramps that make it super easy for it to get to the different levels.

The ramps are not attached so you can customize them to suit your cat’s needs. This cat tree is also great if you have multiple senior cats.

It includes two condos and three towers so there are plenty of relaxing areas to go around! They are at a wide range of heights too, so if your cat prefers to below, it can chill in the low condo but if it prefers to be up high then it will be able to get there with ease.

The only thing I don’t like about this Go Pet Cat Tree is that it’s not the most sturdy of structures out there. But you can easily work around that by fastening it to a wall or something like that.

The thing your cat may enjoy the most about this cat tree is that there are tons of scratching posts for it to scratch at any angle and height.

Size (L x W x H):  50 in (127 cm) x 26 in (66.04 cm) x 72 in (182.88 cm)

This Roypet Adjustable Luxury Cat Tree is great because you can firmly secure it from floor to ceiling. By doing this, you will ensure that your cat is safe as tall structures can be less stable than shorter ones.

It also includes a ramp and platforms that are really close together which will allow your cat to climb to higher heights with ease. It also has baskets and hammocks which comfortably cradle your cat’s keeping them safe from falling.

Size (L x W x H):  46.1 in (117.1 cm) x 15.75 in (40 cm) x 94.4 – 101.2 in (239.78 – 257.05 cm)

If you’re looking for something simple that has everything your old kitty needs to put in your bedroom, office, etc. this is the best option. It has scratching posts, beds, and they’ll even get in their climbing when they feel like it.

While we wouldn’t recommend this as your main cat tree for older cats, it is still one that you can use even as a ramp for your kitty to climb up on to get on your bed, desk, etc.

Its also a good choice, God forbid, when your furry friend needs something to relax on but is nearing its time and you don’t want to make a major investment.

Is Your Older Cat a Large Cat?

If so, you probably don’t like any of these trees, with good reason. Most of them aren’t suitable for large cats.

Why Your Senior Cats Need Cat Trees For Older Cats

Even though their bodies can’t handle what they used to, senior cats still need to maintain normal cat behaviors like scratching and other forms of exercise. And by exercise, we’re not talking about running, jumping and climbing because, obviously, their bodies can’t handle all that impact or activity.

Now that they’re older, exercise will take on new meaning. Basic movements and stretching are plenty for your cat like how a lot of older people like Tai Chi and Yoga. If you are unsure, speak with your cat’s vet or certified medical caregiver.

Even though your cat is aging, its body also still needs the benefits provided by exercising like increased blood flow, warding off certain illnesses, cleansing the body, etc. They may also simply feel the need to move or get high especially if they are tree-dwelling cats.

In other words, just because they are getting older and less able to move doesn’t mean they lose their cat instincts

How To Choose The Best Cat Trees for Older Cats

Choosing the right cat trees for older cats can be difficult. It depends on your cat, its needs, its preferences, and your preferences.

We’ve created this guide with a variety of preferences in mind but here are our recommendations for you to look for. The tree should be:

  1. low, preferably under 50 inches (127 cm)
  2. sturdy or able to be made sturdy
  3. have soft, comfortable bedding and covering material

10 Best Cat Trees For Maine Coons 2018

cat_climbing_structures_maine_coon_trioMaine Coon cats can reach weights up to 18 lbs (8.2 kg)+ and lengths of 3 ft (91.4 cm)+ on average so it’s clear that they need sturdier cat climbing structures than the ones designed for ‘typically sized’ cats which are half their size. The Cat Climbing Structures team has tirelessly gone through the multitude of cat trees that claim to be for ‘large cats’.

As you probably guessed, there were many that didn’t stand up to the test but there were a couple of good ones that really stood out. So now we’re going to reveal to you our exclusive list of the 10 best cat trees for Maine Coons.

These trees will also work for other large cat breeds such as Bengal and Savannah cats.

Make sure to watch the video so that you can have an idea of what to expect and also cut down on reading time. Also be sure you don’t miss our mini guide that tells you everything you need to know before deciding on a cat tree for your Maine coon cat.

The last thing we want is for you to get the wrong one that breaks easily and causes a bad accident if it falls on your cat, another pet, your child or even you! Yes, some of us know that by experience so please take our word on it.

How To Choose the Best Cat Trees for Maine Coon Cats

Before you decide on a tree for your Maine coon cat, there are a couple of things you need to consider first. These qualities are non-negotiable and combined, they will ensure that you are choosing a solid tree that will last a very long time.

It goes without saying that the tree must be sturdy. Cheaply made cat furniture will not last under the pressure of your Maine Coon’s weight or strength but it can also pose a big danger as it will undoubtedly topple over.

The cat tree you choose must be:

  • built with solid wood or comparably strong materials
    • typically plywood but some other woods include oak, maple and pine
  • well balanced
  • able to hold weights over 30 lbs. on all parts

There are two reasons that you want the tree to be constructed from solid wood. The first is obvious in that it will create the most sound structure for the tree.

The second reason is that cats prefer to scratch into natural materials. Though their whole paw won’t reach the wood, having a sturdier foundation under the natural sisal rope or carpeting will feel quite nice and allow your cat to really stretch and apply force on it.

Have you ever stretched on a wall or bench as compared to a bed after exercising? The bench and wall feels better right?

That’s because benches and walls are sturdier structures. It’s the same principle when your cat stretches as well.

The tree must also be well-balanced. Even though it shouldn’t be in the center of your room (I’ll never understand why people do this since cats want to be on the perimeter anyway), you still don’t want it constantly knocking on your wall either.

That will create some serious damage AND leave you with a migraine especially after a long, hard day at work. That’s the LAST thing you want to come home to hear.

There is also the hazards that we mentioned earlier. You want to be sure the tree isn’t going to fall on anyone or anything in your home.

Lastly, you want to be sure the tree can hold at least 50 lbs (30lbs is ok for hammocks since they won’t see as much activity). Many of the trees we recommend have huge weight limits many of which are over 100 lbs.

Remember that weight is measured at rest on these units but the force of that weight increases with movement. And add speed with it, the cat tree that you choose for your Maine coon MUST be able to handle it appropriately.

This product is hands down the absolute BEST cat tree you will find. Its VERY solid, sturdy and heavy duty.

I have really fat cats and they fit on here great. They love this. I probably love it even more.

Very easy to put together. Took me 20 minutes. Comes with everything you need. Pics dont do this thing justice.

Its really a great Cat Tree for the price. You wont find anything online even in the same league.

I want to order their cat tower too if I can figure out how. If you want a cat tree thats reliable..heavy duty and worth the money. You cant go wrong with one from Cat Tree King.

I HIGHLY recommend. And will buy more in the near future. – Brian C .

My kitties love this tree!!! So do I!! Its heavy, quality and beautiful! The sisal posts are huge!!

My kitten loves to climb up the side completely, too to bottom, he loves to lounge in the hammock like bed. My other cat love to use the “slide” and lounge on the top bed like a king!

They are happier than I have ever seen them with this tree. It puts other trees to shame!! I will be buying another one in another style for my kitties 🙂

4. Prestige Cat Trees’ Neutral Staggered Cat Tower Cat Tree

cat_climbing_structures_best_cat_tree_for_large_cats_4_prestige_cat_trees_neutral_staggered_cat_tower_cat_tree

Prestige Cat Trees are made in the USA and super tough. Most of their trees are specifically made for Maine Coons.

Your cat will love this one because there are many varying leveled platforms for it to jump over. It can get in big long leaps or little short bursts or even a mixture or the two.

I’m not a fan of cat trees without condos because most cats like their private time, however, I do like (and your cat will too) that this one has a really tall tower that nothing will reach it and be a pain. Even you depending on your height, haha!

I also like that this is a ‘tower’ design but the platforms allow your cat to have vertical space as well. Your cat will love this tree and the neutral colors will match just about every color scheme so you won’t have to worry about it clashing with your other furniture.

Here’s the breakdown of the Prestige Cat Trees’ Neutral Staggered Cat Tower Cat Tree:

This is the nicest cat tree we have seen yet. Very easy to assemble. Heavy duty fasteners, its made of plywood, not cardboard like you see in the big “pet stores” for twice as much. Very sturdy when our cats run up the side out it chasing each other. Can not believe how well its made. You will not be able to find another one at this price range at this high of quality. Extremely happy with this purchase! – WH

This one is a snippet of a happy Maine Coon that sums everything up just right. He talks about how cheap cat trees didn’t work, including ones sold at pet stores that would constantly fall over. It’s titled ‘Bob gives it 2-paws up’:

To answer my own question yes, it’s sturdy enough for your 19 pound furbaby. I was wary of this product because of it’s price, it was a little too inexpensive, and after seeing pictures of some horror stories from plush fur, cardboard tube, twine wrapped, monstrosities…as well as my cat being a 19 pound maine coon, I was honestly worried. But it came, ever so quickly as promised, I opened the box and was pleasantly surprised at the quality! I mean i was expecting the very worst but it was actually a really nice plush fabric, and it was well wrapped coils and was really sturdy after I put it together! i mean i recomend getting adifferent hex key, but if thats my only complaint your golden, overall assembly wise I was quite pleased at how easy it was, I had it together in 30 minutes tops (but I also put together ikea furniture without instructions easily so…). Our cat took to it immediately and loves to get “drive by pets” by pawing out the window of the box for our attention as we pass. Maybe a bad habit to indulge? but it’s pretty adorable. – Kiki Denison

The tree house is spectacular! Not in the slightest bit wobbly, in which with a bit cat like my 18lb Main Coon, Tiger, that is a good thing! – Auntie Caryn

Go Pet Club Cat Tree Review

Go Pet Club Cat Tree Review

Most cats love to climb by nature. When we bring them into our homes without the proper structures, it can get quite overwhelming as they climb all over everything that they shouldn’t like the stove hood or fridge.

It is also frustrating because they knock things down which can cause even more damage and money. This is why its so important to have the best cat climbing structures for them so that everyone in your home stays safe, including your cat.

I have had a lot of success with cat trees and recommend them to anyone with a cat, regardless of their behavioral patterns though most will jump, climb and scratch all over your home. They give your cat a good workout by enabling them to satisfy their natural desires in a safe, destruction-free way.

This Go Pet Club Cat Tree is near and dear to my heart because it was one of the first cat trees that I ever purchased (Hint: buy online, they’re cheaper than pet stores even on sale) and my cats actually used it.

While there are better options available, I highly recommend this one if you are looking for something inexpensive or just starting to create your indoor cat climbing environment. I ended up giving mine away to a relative in need when I upgraded but understand that you’ve got to start somewhere 🙂

This is a good choice because:

  • it has a lot of pillars/towers
  • lots of scratching surfaces
  • lots of lounging areas
  • multiple cubbies which is great especially if you have multiple cats!
  • it is one of the less expensive cat trees that are pretty decent quality
  • comes in multiple colors

Introduction

The Go Pet Club is perfect for cats who like to climb. It is a bit taller than most which will give your cat that altitude it desires and needs in order to survey his surroundings effectively.

This tree is great for cats that exhibit tree-dwelling, bush dwelling or a combination of both behavior patterns. The only reason I will not recommend this one for cave dwellers is because the nook areas or cubbies if you want to call them that are not fully enclosed.

I would not recommend this tree for large or extra large cats. For example, a Savannah or an obese cat. Most cats are small to medium-sized though so this stand would be fine for most cats otherwise.

  • Two color choices

At $86, this tree is excellently priced. The first tree I ever bought came from Petco and cost $150 + tax. That was on sale too btw. Its regular price was close to $200!

And with this one, you don’t lose quality in the price either. The quality is great and can withstand normal playing, jumping, scratching, etc of your average sized cat.

As a tall girl, I like tall things so I can relate to cats on that level also. They like to have a bird’s eye view of everything. At 72 inches, your cat will get that bird’s eye view she craves.

As far as dimensions go, this one’s dimensions are reported with a 50-inch base but that just includes the ladder. The cats don’t really use the ladder so, without it, the base is 28 inches.

The Go Pet Club Cat Tree is square so it has for corners. Each corner has a pillar but only three go all the way up to tall towers that have beds on the top.

There are two cubbies with entering and exit holes on either side and 10 scratching posts. This cat climbing tree was designed for multiple cats.

It is super easy to put together too. There are plastic screws that hold everything together. You just need to make sure that you lock them in place properly.

Something I find really cool is that you can get this tree in blue as well as the neutral, beige color. This is really nice because it makes it blend in more with the room. Like if it’s in your living room area, it blends in with the furniture instead of standing out screaming ‘I’m a cat tree’ lol!

Cons

Now don’t get me wrong here, the tree is sturdy and durable. But like I said, that the use of this term is relative to the average sized, domestic cats which are usually under 15 lbs.

If your cat is over 15 lbs, this tree will not work because of the plastic screws. They are not designed to take the force that is created due to the heavier weight.

For example, have you ever played with a small dog compared to a large one? Yeah, there is a big difference right? lol!

Your body is aching after playing with a large dog but not so much after playing with a small one. It’s the same thing here 🙂

If you don’t know, cave-dwelling cats are the ones who like to be totally hidden. You have to literally hunt them down and turn over the bed to find them.

The cubbies in this cat climbing structure are too open for a cat of this nature so he will probably not enjoy it at least for relaxing. Which is a big deal because cats play hard but they also sleep hard too so you want something that will suit this sort of cat better.

Final Opinion & Verdict of the Go Pet Club Cat Tree

If you are looking for a cat tree, they don’t come much better than this one. It will give your cat her own space in your house that she can relax, play, investigate and scratch up, lol. Even if you have multiple cats, they will each have their own slice of heaven too.

The ramps are really nice for kittens too. They will be able to climb up on it and play since they can’t jump that high yet.

There aren’t many downsides to this unless you have a large cat or one that prefers to be hidden away. If you really wanted to though, for cave-dwelling cats, you could just close up one hole and see if that works. I haven’t tried it so don’t quote me but it seems like a good idea! lol.

My final verdict is 4.5 out of 5!

But don’t take my word for it. There are over 4 thousand reviews on Amazon that you can read about it!
