Maine Coon cats can reach weights up to 18 lbs (8.2 kg)+ and lengths of 3 ft (91.4 cm)+ on average so it’s clear that they need sturdier cat climbing structures than the ones designed for ‘typically sized’ cats which are half their size. How To Choose the Best Cat Trees for Maine Coon Cats
Before you decide on a tree for your Maine coon cat, there are a couple of things you need to consider first. These qualities are non-negotiable and combined, they will ensure that you are choosing a solid tree that will last a very long time.
It goes without saying that the tree must be sturdy. Cheaply made cat furniture will not last under the pressure of your Maine Coon’s weight or strength but it can also pose a big danger as it will undoubtedly topple over.
The cat tree you choose must be:
- built with solid wood or comparably strong materials
- typically plywood but some other woods include oak, maple and pine
- well balanced
- able to hold weights over 30 lbs. on all parts
There are two reasons that you want the tree to be constructed from solid wood. The first is obvious in that it will create the most sound structure for the tree.
The second reason is that cats prefer to scratch into natural materials. Though their whole paw won’t reach the wood, having a sturdier foundation under the natural sisal rope or carpeting will feel quite nice and allow your cat to really stretch and apply force on it.
Have you ever stretched on a wall or bench as compared to a bed after exercising? The bench and wall feels better right?
That’s because benches and walls are sturdier structures. It’s the same principle when your cat stretches as well.
The tree must also be well-balanced. Even though it shouldn’t be in the center of your room (I’ll never understand why people do this since cats want to be on the perimeter anyway), you still don’t want it constantly knocking on your wall either.
That will create some serious damage AND leave you with a migraine especially after a long, hard day at work. That’s the LAST thing you want to come home to hear.
There is also the hazards that we mentioned earlier. You want to be sure the tree isn’t going to fall on anyone or anything in your home.
Lastly, you want to be sure the tree can hold at least 50 lbs (30lbs is ok for hammocks since they won’t see as much activity). Many of the trees we recommend have huge weight limits many of which are over 100 lbs.
Remember that weight is measured at rest on these units but the force of that weight increases with movement. And add speed with it, the cat tree that you choose for your Maine coon MUST be able to handle it appropriately.

To answer my own question yes, it’s sturdy enough for your 19 pound furbaby. I was wary of this product because of it’s price, it was a little too inexpensive, and after seeing pictures of some horror stories from plush fur, cardboard tube, twine wrapped, monstrosities…as well as my cat being a 19 pound maine coon, I was honestly worried. But it came, ever so quickly as promised, I opened the box and was pleasantly surprised at the quality! I mean i was expecting the very worst but it was actually a really nice plush fabric, and it was well wrapped coils and was really sturdy after I put it together! i mean i recomend getting adifferent hex key, but if thats my only complaint your golden, overall assembly wise I was quite pleased at how easy it was, I had it together in 30 minutes tops (but I also put together ikea furniture without instructions easily so…). Our cat took to it immediately and loves to get “drive by pets” by pawing out the window of the box for our attention as we pass.
